In November 2007, the I-355 extension (Veteran’s Memorial Tollway) opened,
connecting I-55 (the Stevenson Expressway) to I-80, serving the rapidly expanding southwest suburbs of Chicago.
The new road crossed over several preserves along the Des Plaines River in Will and Cook Counties, including habitat of the federally protected Hine’s Emerald Dragonfly and the state protected Blanding’s and Spotted Turtles.
